Encoding relations between visualization views
Large and high resolution displays let users see many visualization views simultaneously spread across a large area. When many visualization views are visible, users might need to understand how these views are related. Our aim in this project is to explore the types of view relations, and thereby identify major categories of view relations. Our aim is to contribute a description of earlier work within the area and review major types of view relations. We aim to raise the field by systemizing the different relation types and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Further, we aim to offer design suggestions for advancing the possibilities of view relations. Understanding how visualization views might be related makes it possible to discuss how to encode these relations visually and to design based on this. Interestingly, most existing representations of view relations use lines. We aim to advance the possibilities in design above state of the art.
